Soooo I was lucky enough to get a short work stint in London (long story), and I’ve been here for a couple of weeks. Here are some interesting observations I had:
- Cyclists are basically killer ninjas on wheels who will silently assassinate you from the back if you’re not looking
- Go to any English pub after 4pm and there will always be a crowd of people standing outside and drinking, even though its 10 degrees outside and they’re wearing just a T-shirt
- The accent makes me feel like adding “ahhhhhh” to everything I say
One good thing about being in a totally new environment: I get to try little social experiments that might seem weird to my friends and colleagues back home.
And so this week, I decided to try to improve my social confidence.
Why Is Social Confidence So Important?
I’m an introvert by nature, and I actually hate small talk. I can fake it if I have to, but it usually feels a little forced and awkward. As I’m making small talk, my mind is always racing through a thousand different thoughts:
- “What do I say next? Think of something smart to say!”
- “What does this person think of me?”
- “WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER AGAIN”
This reluctance for small talk has often led to other implications.
For example, I might come across as aloof or antisocial in the office, especially when I have lots of work to do. I can sit at my desk for an entire day, not talking to anyone, even though I’m surrounded by friendly, sociable colleagues.
Last year, when I was at an event with thousands of entrepreneurs who had paid hundreds of dollars to be there, I had all these mental barriers which kept me from talking to people. So I sat down, took out my phone, and checked my email. As I was doing it, I knew I was being lame. And yet, I couldn’t help myself!
Imagine what would have happened if I had simply reached out to just 3 people. Worse case, it would lead to a couple of awkward conversations. But the upside was virtually unlimited: I could have forged new partnership opportunities, come up with a new business idea, landed a new job offer – the possibilities were endless.
I knew I needed to get better at small talk. Which is where my little social experiment comes in.
“Hi, How’s Your Day Going?”
I decided that I was going to get out of my comfort zone this week and interact with people I don’t know. To make it easier, I was going to start conversations with people who were paid to talk to me: Cashiers, baristas, waiters, security guards, etc. That way, if I bumbled and failed, I could walk away with zero consequences.
The rules of engagement were:
- Start the interaction with firm eye contact and a smile
- Say “Hi, how’s your day going?” without rushing through it
- Pause and wait for the other person to respond (instead of rushing through with my order)
- If the person engages, mention one follow-up comment. E.g. “What’s good on the menu today?”, “I don’t think we’ve met, I’m Lionel.”, “What drink is that? That looks really cool.”
That’s it. Even if the conversation had ended there, I’d check it off as a success. The point was to force myself to interact with as many people as possible, and hopefully it would get more natural over time.
So What Happened?
Over the past week, I’ve said “Hi, how’s your day going?” to dozens cashiers, baristas, restaurant servers, the security guard who works in my building, and an elderly couple I shared a table with.
Most people simply responded with a “I’m good, thank you!” and waited for my order. Some responded with “I’m good! And how are you?” which I took as a positive sign and asked my follow-on question. I found that when I slowed down my words (My first few interactions were along the lines of “Hihowsyourdaygoing”) and smiled, these tended to illicit better responses.
There were also some unexpected benefits:
- I now know the name of my building’s security guard and say hi to him every day
- A barista introduced me to some good Belgium chocolate chips which they add to their cocktails
- My wife and I had a great conversation over lunch with a couple who retired and visited Singapore a couple of months ago
These might seem like small wins, but adding them up had a profound effect on me: I started feeling more confident, stood a little taller, and smiled a little more. I’m hoping that with practice, the inclination to reach out to someone I don’t know will be so natural that I wouldn’t even have to think about it.

If there’s nothing that is blocking my mind, I could talk about anything, ask many questions and that’s how I usually strike a conversation.
But…I have a problem which I have to look up in the internet for answers. That is I do not how to respond to “How’s your day going?” Or “How are you?” My response will always be an awkward “Erm…fine.” That’s it! I couldn’t say things like “I’m great! How about you?” Maybe… most of the time I’m feeling sleepy instead of great. 🙂

in general, i find that asking genuine questions and showing that you actually care to know the person better works well. most people love talking about themselves! asking questions and letting them do the talking lets you get them to know better and also helps you gauge whether they are interested in getting to know you by reciprocating with questions. also, think about the number of people who hate small talk as much as you do…from their perspective, how refreshing is it to come across someone who isn’t just trying to make small talk? of course that works in conjunction with having good posture, smiling, and speaking confidently. send out positive energy and receive positive vibes in return!

People shouldn’t feel obliged to reply great. It becomes cursory. I just try to expand my vocab and says it as it is. It gets people all awkward but i love how that opens up more conversations for me.

Hi Lionel,
this reminds me of the intorvert Chinese guy who objected himself to facing rejection for 100 days in a roll. In the process, he discovered that simply asking for what you want can open up possibilities where you expect to find dead ends. His experiment lead to a TED talk and a successful consultancy buisiness.
I love how you intentionally expand your comfort zone by doing small experiments. What always works for me is asking questions, making small compliments and random acts of kindness. I always make sure to give credit for something well done or say Congratulations if the situation calls for it.
Generally, we human beings like to be liked and affirmed. People are often surprised and delighted if someone notices them, gives them a way or takes the time and effort to start a conversation.
